The Au Lab at Columbia University Medical Center is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a background in molecular neurobiology to lead a project on cortical interneuron synapse specificity. Cortical interneurons are the sole source of inhibition in the cortex and act through a distributed network to modulate cortical activity by regulating information salience, enacting cortical rhythmicity, and shifting attentional states. Their dysfunction is thought to be a root cause for a number of neuropsychiatric diseases. Central to their function (and dysfunction) are interneuron synapses, which are, to date, poorly understood. We recently developed a novel approach that enabled us to gain a better understanding of interneuron synaptic diversity. Armed with this new framework for understanding interneurons, we now wish to uncover the molecular basis governing the specificity of these newly-discovered classes of interneuron synapses. The project will encompass machine learning, mouse genetics, biochemistry, spatial transcriptomics and bioinformatics.
