Introduction
김진경 교수는 St. Louis 에 위치한 Washington University School of Medicine의 교수로 재직 중이며, The KIM Lab의 연구 책임자입니다. 본 연구실에서는 In Vivo 영상 기법을 통해 우리의 귀가 어떻게 소리를 인지하고 해석하는지 이해하고, 나아가 Irreversible hearing loss 의 예방 및 치료 기작을 밝혀내는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다.
In vivo multicellular imaging 기법은 우리의 감각 (시각, 후각, 미각, 촉각)이 우리의 말단 기관에서 (눈, 코, 혀, 피부) 어떤 방식을 통해 인지되고 해석되어 뇌로 전달되는 지에 대한 insight 를 제공해 왔습니다. 그러나 우리의 청각 기관은 그간 세포 수준에서의 In vivo imaging 이 불가능하였기에, 다섯 개의 감각 기관 중 유일하게 알려진 바가 거의 없습니다. 이유는 우리의 귀(cochlea)가 해부학적으로 접근이 어렵고, 매우 민감하며, 액체로 채워진 뼈로 둘러싸인 구조이기 때문입니다. 김진경 교수는 Cochlea 실시간 영상기법 개발을 통해 기존의 이러한 기술적 한계를 극복했습니다 (Kim and Ricci, PNAS, 2022; Kim and Ricci, Nature Protocols, 2023).
본 연구실의 핵심 연구 방향은 다음과 같습니다.
1) Characterizing the properties of sound coding and processing in the cochlea and along the auditory pathway.
The Kim lab aims to uncover how cochlear cells receive and process complex sound input through in vivo monitoring of sound-evoked multicellular activities. Furthermore, we delve into the roles played by various subtypes of spiral ganglion neurons in auditory signal processing, employing optogenetic control and in vivo monitoring of responses along the auditory pathway.
2) Identifying the transport mechanisms of ototoxic drugs into the cochlea and developing pathway blockers to prevent drug-induced hearing loss.
The Kim lab studies the transport mechanisms of ototoxic anticancer drugs via real-time, in vivo drug tracking and work towards the development of potential protective therapies.
